When Rest Makes You Feel Guilty

Rest has never come naturally to me. I am much better at pushing through. At doing the next thing. At telling myself I’ll rest when this is finished, when the list is shorter, when everyone else is taken care of, when I’ve finally done “enough.”

The problem is, enough keeps moving.

And somewhere along the way, I learned to feel guilty for slowing down.

Even when my body was tired.

Even when my mind was overloaded.

Even when I knew I needed a break.

There has often been this little voice underneath it all saying, You should be doing more.

I’m learning that voice is not always telling me the truth.

Rest is not the same as quitting. Slowing down is not the same as giving up. And needing restoration does not mean I have failed.

Sometimes the most faithful thing I can do is stop trying to prove how much I can carry.

That is hard for me. Really hard.

But I am beginning to understand that God can still be working when I am not.

He does not need my exhaustion to accomplish His purposes. He does not love me more on the days when I cross everything off the list. And He is not disappointed in me when I need to sit down, breathe, recover, and let Him restore what life has worn thin.

So this prayer is very much for me this week.

Maybe it is for you too.

If rest makes you feel guilty, if slowing down makes you anxious, or if you keep telling yourself you should be able to handle more, maybe this is your reminder:

You are allowed to receive the rest God gives without apologizing for needing it.

What part of you needs restoration this week?
